This spring and summer, Advance Strategies' members have been out in force sharing their professional industry knowledge and experiences through speaking, teaching and publishing — demonstrating a thought leadership role in the industry. Advance Strategies members participated with organizations and publishers regarding a range of activities working with the AIA, CoreNet Global, IFMA, SCUP, SHRM, Buildings, Building Operating Management, and Building Design + Construction magazines.

Society for Human Resource Management Learns Trends for New Workplace Strategies at its 59th Annual Conference and Exposition
Antonia Cardone, Vice President for Advance Strategies in San Francisco, shared lessons learned from her years of working with organizations to implement new workplace strategies. Her presentation at the SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition, "Creating Value Through the Workplace," noted that a successful workplace strategy must create the ability to respond rapidly to change, attract, enable, and retain a productive workforce, help achieve performance goals, and optimize the organization's resources.

The conference featured the HOK presentation, "Shaping the Future of Medical Education: From Idea to Building Design to Accreditation," by Susan Mitchell-Ketzes, Senior Vice President at HOK Advance Strategies-Atlanta, and Paul Woolford, Senior Vice President and Director of Design at HOK-San Francisco, along with client, J. Ocie Harris, Dean of the College of Medicine, Florida State University.

 

Green-ness Envy: Why are Businesses Competing to Go Green? And What is the Impact on the Workplace?
HOK Advance Strategies' Vice President Leigh Stringer from the HOK-Washington DC location, addressed the primary drivers behind green business practices and the impacts of green thinking on the workplace, including changing work styles, work processes and technology with members at the American Institute of Architects at the AIA Florida State Convention, July 13-14, 2007.

Integrate 2007: Facility Management Conference, Hong Kong, June 2007
Peter M. Winters, AIA, CFM, Senior Vice President, delivered a presentation to facility managers from the Asia-Pacific region entitled, "The Trials and Tribulations of Global Facility Planning." This presentation shared successes and failures in implementing global processes and standards for facility planning. It addressed how to approach the subject of standardization within different cultures and business environments and also explained the regulatory constraints that are imposed in different countries.

The presentation demonstrated a model for capturing the spirit of global process and planning standardization while maintaining regional sensitivity and relevance. View the presentation.

 

CoreNet Global Executive Development Program on Workplace Strategy Received High Marks at the Spring Summit Conference in Denver
Antonia Cardone and Jim Rice, Vice Presidents with HOK Advance Strategies in San Francisco and Atlanta respectively, served as co-instructors and co-developers of a two-day professional development course offered at the CoreNet Global Summit held in Denver, Colorado. Following the session Becky Binder, Director of Executive Development for CoreNet, sent word to Antonia and Jim that they had "hit a home run" with the newly updated course content for the program, "Creating Corporate Value Through Workplace Strategy."

Similar comments were received from several attending the course. Said another participant, "The integrity, energy, enthusiasm, level of knowledge and creativity that you bring to the learning experience is tremendous and most appreciated."

HOK Advance Strategies contributes to two articles published in Buildings Magazine – a journal for facilities decision-makers

Jim Rice, Vice President of HOK Advance Strategies in Atlanta, contributed to an article published in Buildings magazine regarding GSA’s Workplace 20.20 Program. The article, “Using the WorkPlace to Facilitate Change,” describes GSA’s effort to design space to support the people that use it. Jim Rice, a member of the HOK project team that helped to develop Workplace 20.20 processes and tools, describes findings related to the information gathering process and workplace mobility.

HOK Advance Strategies helped to create the qualitative data collection methods and tools used by all workplace consultants working on the GSA WorkPlace 20.20 project. The article also features a brief summary of an Advance Strategies pilot project completed for the GSA Office of Civil Rights in Washington, DC. Read the article.


In a second article published in the same Buildings issue, Pete Winters, Vice President of HOK Advance Strategies in Dallas, documents several scenarios regarding optimal timing in assembling project teams that have multiple partners. The article defines roles for various partners in support of mutual project objectives and collaborative environments. Pete addressed three instances that supported the contractor joining the project at the same time as all other team members. Read the article.
